Combined transport is a special form of intermodal freight transport in which the loading units, e.g. semi-trailers, containers and swap bodies, are transported by rail or boat.
Most of the route is covered by rail and by inland or maritime shipping.
Pre- and on-carriage by road is kept to a minimum.
The following two categories are distinguished:
- Unaccompanied combined transport
